Family Travels - 4

Wow, this is an explosion of posts after two weeks of silence, I hope that doesn't discourage you from reading them. Our second and last day in NY we took the tour to the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The statue is great, and I definitely suggest paying the extra to go into the base. The museum is great. The first torch is there - that's right, the torch lady liberty is holding is not the original torch! The first one was lit from the inside and began to leak and cause rust, and since all the attempts to save it failed they replaced it with the one we see today, lit from the outside. My favorite tidbit was that the statue was unveiled too early! During a lull in a speech, the signal was mistakenly given, and the crowd cheered too loud at the sight of her face for the speech to continue for awhile. :) Ellis Island was neat too, it was neat to imagine my own great-grandmother being carried across that same hall at one year of age, having just seen Holland for the last time. What a heritage America gives so many people! We are all blessed to be able to have the freedoms we enjoy.
